Why won't 1 space in this MySQL string display?

I have a Laravel app in which I am using Mail::queue to send transactional email. I am getting the values for the email content from a MySQL table. I am having this crazy experience with the subject line. It's called from a text field and contains this value;

, 500 $ de rabais sur un nouveau véhicule Auto, ça vous dirait ?

Everything renders fine except for the space between véhicule and Auto. It seems no matter what I do this space is ignored. Weird.

Anyone seen this before? Could it have something to do with the accents? Although the same app has sent many other emails from the same table using subject lines with accents...
