Laravel Wysiwyg ckeditor won't upload images to ubuntu server

I'm working on a project that uses Laravel's wysiwyg to manage blog posts. There's an option to browse server where you can view image files previously uploaded and upload new ones.

The upload functionality seems to work on my vagrant box but not on the live Ubuntu 16 server. I don't get any Laravel or Apache errors thrown at me. I set the folders it uploads to to 777 and ownership to www-data and it still wouldn't work.

I'm assuming it's a server related issue but at this point I don't know what to look for or what to change.
