Laravel connection refused on migration

I've been trying to connect laravel 5 to a mysql database for the past few days without success. When I run php artisan migrate, i always get :enter image description here

I've tried different settings in my .env (localhost for host ...) but doesn't work.

The same project with exactly the same code works perfectly fine on my other laptop (I downloaded the code from that laptop). So why is it not working and how do I fix this ? How do you figure out at 100% what you are supposed to enter as hostname/username/password/database/port ? Do I have to do something on the database beforehand ?

I'm working under OS X on both computers and using XAMPP.

I'm really stucked and would really appreciate some help :D
