How to make a laravel 5.0 project work with php 7.0

I have a existing Laravel 5.0 project and a new Laravel 5.6 project. I have php 7.2 in my system. As php 7 doesn't support mcrypt, I am facing issue running Laravel 5.0 project. And php 7.2 is mandatory for Laravel 5.6.

Has any one faced similar issue? I am using xampp in windows. Is there a way to enable mcrypt plugin in php 7.2? Is there a way to make laravel 5.0 project work without mcrypt?

I have googled and tried most of the suggestions available. Nothing worked. So posting here hoping that some one would have cracked it.
