How to shorten the generated URLs in Laravel

Seems like a simple thing but difficult to find a simple solution.

The question is: How do I shorten a Laravel URL from

domain.com/item/listing-27 TO domain.com/listing

Instead of 'listing-27' a unique chosen name and no /item

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
