What's the advantage of ReactJS+Laravel over ReactJS with a remote Lumen instance?

Laravel supports ReactJS with Laravel Mix. My question is isn't it overkilling to use Laravel with ReactJS. I can build an front-end on just ReactJS and can call apis from a remote lumen instance. What's the difference and what are the advantages?
