Deploying Laravel5.6 application in shared hosting

I am relatively new in Laravel. I have to buy a hosting space for deploying my Laravel 5.6 application. I went through a number of blogs in the web and understood that it is possible to deploy it in a shared hosting.

However a few hosting providers say you need VPS for Laravel. I want to know, what are the requirements for deploying the Laravel application.

I know that PHP 5.6/PHP 7.0 both will do. Am I correct? Also should the hosting necessarily have SSL? Any other requirement that I should be checking?
